It is the story of three young boys’ life in Paris’ banlieue after a night of riots because of the accidental death of Abdel Ichaha, one of the residents of Les Muguets. Vinz (Vincent Cassel), Saïd (Saïd Taghmaoui) and Hubert (Hubert Koundé) wander in this place and each one try to go through this event in his way.

Vinz is the most violent and impulsive; he compares himself to the character of Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver. He is opposed to Hubert who tries to mollify his friends arguing that ‘La haine engendre la haine’ (Hate generates hate). Saïd is between those two extremely opposed positions and is a kind of conciliator and a witness (the movie starts on him opening his eyes and finish on him closing his eyes). Hubert and Saïd try to convince Vinz that violence is not the solution until the final scene when finally they are catch up by this violence. The idea of origins is pointed by the three main characters, indeed, Vinz is white and Jewish, Saïd represents the ‘Beur culture’ and he is Muslim, and Hubert is black and Christian. Kassovitz represents with the three characters the diversity of France.
